Domino’s Pizza uses its small number of company-owned stores as locations to test new products, trial promotions, and make operational improvements. The owner of a franchised store has invested their own money into the project they can benefit from the know-how of a strong brand such as Domino’s Pizza, but it is their responsibility to ensure the restaurant is a success. In 2021, the majority of Domino’s Pizza restaurants in the United States were franchised stores. What is the difference between franchised and company-owned stores? Despite the continued growth of Domino’s Pizza, the chain restaurant with the most store locations in the U.S. Independent pizzerias continue to outnumber chain restaurants, but the gap between the two is narrowing: the difference stood at more than 8,000 units in 2017, but this was reduced to around 5,000 in 2021. The overall number of pizza restaurants in the United States reached a total 75,117 in 2021. Mind the gap: chain restaurants close in on independents Domino’s Pizza is primarily a franchised business and has increased its number of franchised stores year-on-year since 2009. A record number of 6,400 Domino’s Pizza stores were in operation across the United States in 2022, an increase of 215 restaurants on the previous year.
